Privacy policy

Last updated: · written by the FileLocator team

Effective date: August 4, 2026. The short version: filelocator.net is a static website. There are no accounts to create, no forms to fill in, and nothing you can upload. What we do collect is limited to standard hosting logs and Google Analytics traffic measurement — both described in plain language below, along with the choices and rights you have.

The File Finder tool

Our free in-browser File Finder processes everything locally. When you point it at a folder, your files are read by JavaScript running in your browser tab. File names, file contents, folder structures, search queries and results are never transmitted to us or to anyone else. Close the tab and everything is gone.

What we collect

  • Hosting logs. Like most websites, our hosting provider records standard request data — IP address, user-agent, requested URL, referrer and timestamp — used for security, abuse prevention and aggregate traffic statistics.
  • Analytics. We use Google Analytics (gtag.js, measurement ID G-35NLEKLKB3) to understand which pages are read and how visitors find them. It records page views, approximate location (country or region derived from IP), browser, operating system and device type. It does not see anything you do inside the File Finder tool.
  • Email. If you write to [email protected], we receive your address and message and use them only to reply. The conversation lives in email, nowhere else.

Cookies

The only cookies this site sets are Google Analytics cookies, used to distinguish returning visits and measure traffic. We run no advertising networks. You can block analytics cookies in your browser settings or with the Google Analytics opt-out add-on, and the site works exactly the same without them.

Amazon Associates links

Some of our hardware gear pages contain Amazon affiliate links, as explained in our affiliate disclosure. If you click one, Amazon sets cookies in your browser so it can attribute a purchase to us. That happens on Amazon's side and under Amazon's rules — see Amazon's own privacy notice for details. Until you click, no Amazon cookie is involved.

Google Fonts

Our typefaces load from Google's fonts CDN. Like any web request, that means your browser sends your IP address to Google when it fetches the font files. We don't receive any of that information; it's a standard consequence of using a CDN.

Legal bases (GDPR)

If you are in the EEA or the UK, we rely on: legitimate interests for security logs and aggregate analytics; consent where local law requires it for non-essential cookies; and performance of a request when you email us and we use your details to reply.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal information we hold about you, to object to or restrict processing, to receive a copy in a portable format, to withdraw consent, and to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. California residents have equivalent rights under the CCPA; we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined there. In practice the only personal data we ever hold is email correspondence — write to [email protected] and we'll act on any of these requests within the time required by law.

Retention

  • Hosting logs are kept by our provider on a rolling window, typically up to 90 days.
  • Analytics data follows Google Analytics retention settings, currently 14 months at the user/event level.
  • Email is kept as long as needed to reply and maintain a record of issues, typically up to 24 months.

International transfers

Google, our analytics and fonts provider, operates globally. Where personal information leaves the EEA or UK, these providers rely on appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent UK mechanisms.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

What we don't do

  • We don't sell, rent or share personal data.
  • We don't run advertising networks on the site.
  • We don't store anything you type into the File Finder — it never leaves your browser.

Questions

If anything here is unclear, or you believe this page no longer matches how the site behaves, please contact us and we'll clarify or correct it. Material changes to this policy will be reflected in the effective date above.
